Certain handling procedures are absolutely vital when giving a cow a physical examination. And it is precisely these manual handling skills that AgroFarm aims to demonstrate and explain. It is important to examine each cow in the herd in order to identify sick animals and to assist risk groups, such as newly calved cows, as well as to be able to control the herd. The examination focuses on the main organ systems and functions of significance to newly calved cows and cows in advanced lactation, i.e. metabolism, uterus, udder and rumen etc. The aim is to hone participants’ examination skills to allow them to identify correlations and approach the animal holistically whilst also relating the findings back to the situation of the entire stock. Knowing which individual stages are involved in the examination of an individual animal is fundamental to the holistic treatment and analysis of cow herds.
Measures demonstrated
- Clinical examination
- Listening to vital organs with a stethoscope
- Rectal examination
- Post-partum vaginal examination
- Taking urine samples
- Taking blood samples
- Treating cows: infusions, injections, inserting uterine pessaries
- Drenching –vital for ensuring sick animals maintain sufficient liquid intake levels and for stimulating rumen functions
- Udder control
- Insemination
Benefits for visitors:
Visitors have the chance to learn a few important handling procedures that will enable them to better understand the individual cow and the herd as a whole and thus to monitor and assist their lactating cows accordingly. Examining individual cows is the best way of identifying and then treating problems in the herd.
Who will be doing the demonstrations?
The clinical examinations will be performed by vets from the herd management company ‘HCS Herdenmanagement’ and Dr. Eller’s Veterinary Clinic.
Visitors will then have the chance to put their questions to the experts at the ‘Cow Service’ Stand.
