UVPure – a milk pretreatment device for calf milk feeding developed by GEA Farm Technologies

The milk pretreatment device UVPure (UV = ultraviolet; Pure = purifier) manufactured by GEA Farm Technologies (Germany) makes for raising healthy calves by feeding them with specially pretreated whole milk. The application of ultraviolet radiation kills over 99% of pathogens, whereas important nutrients essential for calf health are retained.  UVPure operates in an automatic mode, is easy to control and consumes less power than conventional pasteurizers.

Operating principle:

The core of the device is a UV turbulator. A very thin trickle of milk flows along a glass cylinder containing UV tubes: UV rays (250nm) penetrate the milk and affect the bacteria by destroying their DNA. The bacteria are no longer capable of multiplication.

From a container, milk is moved though turbulators with the help of a pump. The process is repeated in designated periods of time. The milk can be warmed up to the feeding temperature. The pretreated milk is accumulated in the milk tank. From there, it can be directly fed to calves or pumped into a cooling tank. The overall duration of the process depends on the milk volume and quantity of UV lamps. The system is flushed automatically.
